The Food and Drug Administration has expanded its recall of dry dog foods that have been formulated with a level of vitamin D that is toxic to dogs.

According to an update from the FDA, scientists have found vitamin D levels in some of the products to be as much as 70 times what was intended.

The recall began with three bag sizes of Nutrisca's Chicken and Chickpea dry dog food formula, which was recalled about a month ago after at least three dogs were sickened.

The recall has since been expanded to some Natural Life, Sunshine Mills, ANF, Lidl Orlando, Kroger, ELM, Nature's Promise and Nature's Place dry dog foods. Affected items were sold at retailers nationwide.

Excess vitamin D can cause vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, excessive drooling and weight loss in dogs. In extreme cases, kidney failure and death can also result.

"Pet owners whose dogs have  been eating the recalled brands and are showing these symptoms should contact their veterinarians," the recall notice from the FDA states. "If your pet is having symptoms of vitamin D toxicity, contact a veterinarian immediately."

Consumers can report suspected illness to the FDA online at this link. Details on what information you should provide are available at this link.

If you own any recalled dog food, the FDA recommends you throw it away in a way that children, pets and wildlife can't get to them, and to contact the company listed on the package for further instructions.
